Socotra is home to a plethora of unique reptiles. Nineteen of the 22 reptile species recognized are only found on the islands. Several species of gecko and a single species of chameleon are among them (Chamaeleo monachus). The majority of snakes on the islands are small and inconspicuous, such as blind snakes. Termite nests are a common home for these little snakes. These tiny snakes often dwell in termite nests. There is no tortoise on the island, but green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are thought to nest on the coast.
